World Bodypainting Festival, Asia - extending the family
At the 2007 World Bodypainting Festival Alex & Karala Barendregt were approached by Mr Park Han Chee and bodypainting artists and professor Choi Sung Min. Mr Park was inspired to have an event like the festival in South Korea and invited us there to talk about the possibilities.
We arrived in Seoul and were made to feel at home among the friendly people. They made a wonderful effort to share their culture with us, including a wide range of delicious foods!
As well as Mr Park Chan Hee we were welcomed by Mrs. Ahn Mi Rye from Korean Pro Make-Up Association. We are happy to have a co-operation with the association who are doing a lot of work to help make a festival in South Korea a possibility.
During a visit to the Seoul Art College Alex was surprised with an honorary professor title in recognition of his work to spread the art of bodypainting around the world. President Cho Hee Wahn and Kim Min Song honored him with a diploma.
In the evenings we were happy to take part in another very important part of Korean culture. Karaoke! Mr. Lee Young-Soo from Pira Cosmetics and Mr. Han from MBC Beauty Academy rocked the house.
During a celebration of another partner, The Korean Nail Art Association with the president Mrs. Lee, Eun Kyun. We were able to meet many interesting people in the arts and film industries who may be involved in the festival.
After a few days in Seoul with travelled south to the city of Daegu. As during the whole trip we were also able visit many make-up schools and colleges teaching bodypainting. Here we visited the Daegu Health College. Mr. Park from the Health College in Daegu is a major contributor to the effort to realize the festival project.
South Korea has thousands of make-up students throughout many schools, colleges and universities. We were happy to see so many enthusiastic young people wanting to learn more about bodypainting.
We were also lucky to see some of the traditional side of what is otherwise a busy modern country. Here we visited a beautiful temple with traditional gardens.
After our first visit we were happy to be able to create a co-operation with a dedicated team lead by Mr Park Chan Hee to create the World Bodypainting festival Asia. The beautiful city of Daegu was picked as the right place to hold the festival on the second visit in January 2008.
The slogan of the city is ‘Colorful Daegu’ which is a beautiful combination for a bodypainting event! Daegu has 3 ½ Million people and is a pumping centre for make-up and fashion industries.
On a second visit in January Alex was happy to meet the committee who will be responsible for the World Bodypainting Festival Asia.
A busy schedule of meetings was arranged to get the festival in process. Meetings with the government, town hall of Daegu and many network partners and sponsors.
Finally the 3rd visit in the middle of March confirmed all details. The World Bodypainting Festival 2008 in Asia has the official go ahead.
A special venue for a special event was selected. The Daegu World Cup Stadium, second largest stadium in Asia.
Many people from Korea are making this dream happen. We hope to share these special moments with artists from around the world and these special people working hard to create this event. Details availalbe soon at www.bodypainting-festival.com

Membership Get Together in London during the IMATS 2008
This year the World Bodypainting Association again visited the International Makeup Artists Trade Show in London which was held at the new location of Alexandra Palace.
We were happy to see the Vargas team at work with their beautiful painting all the way from the USA.
It was also an honor to see Rick Baker who has won many awards for his Special Effects work on films like Star Wars, Harry and the Hendersons, Mighty Joe Young, Men in Black, The Nutty Professor andHow the Grinch Stole Christmas.
Dennis Penkov who has been in our Jury for the passed years was also showing some interesting special effects making a hairy man.
This is an interesting technique where hair is attached to the face and body using electromagnetic static.
Vicky was still representing Charles Fox even though she is at the end of her pregnancy. Charles Fox is a WBPA partner and gives also all year a discount on all purchases in their shop in Covent Garden, London.
In the evening we had our WBPA get together where we were able to meet up with lots of members from all around the world including Ursula Philippi who was there all the way from Vienna.
Carolyn Roper was able to make it along after a job, she won the World Champion title in 2007 for Brush & Sponge with Carly utting and will be in our Jury this year.
Two more artists who have made first place at the festival were also able to join us, Bert Verstappen from the Netherlands and Birgit Mörtl from Austria.
Fausto Zucchi travelled all the way from Italy to share his happy smile with our friends. Also from Italy coming was the Israeli Artist Einat Dan working in Milano. She is working on a new line of make up and will publish some news soon.
Bridget Lee is an artist who has been at the world bodypainting festival and works in London. Julie Oliver from Illusion magazine was there with her husband Brian to tell us some secrets of what will be in the next magazine. Illusion presented our artist gift of a magazine with every membership that we have just sent out with the 2008 information. Baltic Beauty World, Riga, Latvia

For the passed three years the Latvian Stylist Association have visited the World Bodypainting Festival and presented some amazing work and shows.

Each year in Riga, the capital of Latvia, the Baltic Beauty Worlds convention is held.
As a major part of this convention the Latvian Stylist Association hold a competition with two categories; the Image and the bodypainting competitions.

The World Bodypainting Association was happy to visit Riga for the third time and take part in the judging of both categories. The work standard was again very high with some beautifully creative works being presented.

Many of the entrants were students from the International Stylist School of Beruta Magele who are a partner of World Bodypainting Association.

Also part of the judging team was Carolyn Roper from the UK who won the World Champion title in the category of Brush and Sponge at the World Bodypainting Festival this year.

Color Mundo - Make up Show in Montreal (Canada)

The Color Mundo Backstage Make-up "LES COULISSES DU MAQUILLAGE" was held in Montreal for the first time. It was organized by WBPA member and partner Gaelle Mouster from "ExceptionNail.Beauty Magazine".
We were happy to have had the opportunity to promote the WBPA and the World Bodypainting Festival at the 2 days event.
A bodypainting contest was organized on the first day. The models were presented to the audience in 2 categories in the late afternoon.
In the jury were Marcella Murad (FABIAC Orlando), the manager of Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics and Alex Barendregt (WBPA and World Bodypainting Association)
15 artists took place in the brush/sponge category.The winner in that category was Evé Monnier.
The category airbrush was dominated by Alex Hansen, who will again compete in the World Bodypainting Festival in Austria this July.
One of the exhibitors was of course our partner and sponsor Kryolan.

Membership Get Together in Germany
For the first time we organized a WBPA get together in Germany. Heidi and Manfred Weisslein from the Atelier Weisslein organized a lovely evening in their home town Ingolstadt.
More than 25 members came to the meeting, some didn't have that much time, but we had a lot of time to talk.
Party up side down ? It felt like - we started of in a trendy mexican bar with a great vibe. After a few nice hours we agreed to move on to a quieter venue so that we could discuss next years theme for the World Bodypainting Festival.
So we went to a very unique and traditional bavarian "Gasthaus". (Everybody could use the slide into the restaurant)
Alex and Karala came on that day direct from Stockholm (Sweden) to Ingolstadt. In Stockholm we were invited by the company MIST - Make up Institute Stockholm. Mist has a complete product line for make up, bodypainting and beauty.
We were able to bring some samples with us to the meeting to let the members test the prodcuts. The make up artists were amazed by the quality. We fixed a co-operation with MIST for our W.B.P.A. members, who now get a 30% discount on all purchases. Details about the Stockholm visit
Then we discussed the bodypainting themes for the World Bodypainting Festival 2007 One theme was anounced on that evening. An the theme is: Chaos vs. Control

Membership Get Together in the Netherlands:

On April 16th, 2006 the last WBPA Bodypainting Contest in Venray took place.

Due to this oportunity we have organized a WBPA membership get together on the 15th of April.

Bert Verstappen, the orgnizer of the Maskerade organized for the participats a camp site to stay. On that campsite there is a nice bar where we would meet up at 7.00 pm.:

Visitors can park on the parking place and can walk in for free into the campsite. The Parkcafe is about 250 m from the parking place, so appx. 5 minutes walk.

UK Membership Get Together in London:
On Jannuary 27th, 2006 we organized a membership get together again in the Jury's Inn, London. The 4th time we asked members to meet up and have a good chat.
Around 25 members came together this time. We were with a whole crew (Alex & Karala Barendregt,
head of the Jury Ernst Wieser and head of photography Oswin Eder) in London over the weekend. Jane Wigh from Dänemark also came to our meeting and to the tradeshow.
For Mark Dennis and Victoria Kamen it was the second UK get-together.
Long time-Festival participants like Ann Eatwell, Malcolm Terry and Jaquline Bristley were also present and we were finally able to enjoy a peaceful chat.
Britta Herold and our newest member in the W.B.P.A. Elodie Oliveira.
Ernst had a good talk with the Dutch couple Elly and Frans Hannemann.
The mask builder Andreas Moravec is at IMATS every year and as a member of the W.B.P.A. gladly joined us at the meeting. Andi will also be at the festival again this year giving a Special Effects Workshop. All Details on our Festival Homepage.
On this weekend IMATS the International Make up Artist Trade Show was in the Business Design Center. At the trade show are around 30 of the most important Make up and Special Effects companies .
A teacher from the make up school Brushstroke at work. The teeth from this model are from Fangs FX, London. Fangs FX produces the specialised teeth for all the biggest film productions and may be at the festival this year.
There was also a small exhibition from Special Effects and Prosthetics.
Mark Smith is the editor of the British Make up Magazine Warpaint. In the last Magazine we had a six side story over the festival as well as the association.

Raphaelle & Gary Fieldhouse painted on the stand from Charles Fox and joined us at the Jury's Inn. It was great to see our members again and also to see a few new faces..

Membership Get Together in Newtown, Sydney
On December 15th, 2005 we organized the 3rd get together of the World Body Painting Association in Australia. After the fantastic feedback from the get togethers in London and Vienna we met up this time in Newtown, a very busy suburb in Sydney where Karala comes from.
Alex and Karala Barendregt used the opportunity while we were in Sydney to meet up with some of our bodypainting members at the beautiful rooftop bar at Zanzibar.
Very surprising was that Rosemary Willcox from Melbourne also came along. She is working currently as a make up and sfx artist on a Stephen King TV series in Melbourne. It was fantastic that she was able to come over.
Sarah Bull (Vaig Make up studio) , current world champion in the brush/sponge category was there as well as Darren Marshall (Make up Glamour). He was in Seeboden three years ago and got the vice world champion title for special effects.
Journalist Alex Walker was very interested in the World Body Painting Association. She is doing a big report on one of the next issues of the newspaper "Sydney Central Courier" about the association and the World Bodypainting Festival in Austria next year.

2nd Membership Get Together in Vienna, Austria On the 4th November we organized the 2nd WBPA Membership get together in Vienna. We met up in the Make up school Renner at 6.00 p.m. The school is our new co-operation partner. They are general importer in Austria for Fardel Creations and the american product line of Mehron, with Paradise AQ. Of course WBPA members get benefits from this co-operation and get discounts on all products as well as workshops and courses. The WBPA chairman Alex Barendregt also published the themes for next years World Bodypainting Festival in Seeboden. These are "Art History" for the pre selection, and "Transport - move it!" for the finals. The make up school provided drinks and snacks in a nice athmosphere. We discussed, laughed and then partied till late night. It was a successful get together especially due to the fantastic hospitality of the Renner school. Many thanks
