Karala comes from an arts background that includes visual and performances arts. She studied dance at Sydney Dance Development including Ballet, Creative, Bodenwieser, Tap and Jazz styles of dance. She was a player with drama companies and theatre groups and studied guitar and song writing with Don Hopkins, an award winning Australian blues artist.

Her main area of studies has been in visual arts focusing on art history and painting on canvas, an area she continues to explore today.

In 1999 she first came into contact with the art of Bodypainting when working as production assistant on a documentary about the artform and developed a close working relationship with artists Sahra Bull and Darren Marshall from Sydney. Her performance experience lead her to take up modelling for the two artists and they spent the following years working together as a team and travelling to various competitions around the world where both artists received international acclaim.

Since 2004 Karala has lived in South Austria with her husband Alex Barendregt and worked together with him in the organisation of the World Bodypainting Festival which he created in 1998. She focuses on the artistic development areas of the festival as well as communication areas.

Karala also represents the World Bodypainting Association and works all year round in developing and furthering the recognition of this art form internationally. She is dedicated to supporting artists and advancing the direction of the art of bodypainting. Her work for the association has carried her around the world and put her in close contact with most of the leading artists and companies in the international bodypainting industry.
