The Festival of body Arts would like to present to you a special person with a unique history – Mem (Mary) Bourke.
Raised in Mangere East, Auckland Mem's imagination and creativity were nurtured in a dynamic family of eight. By 21 she had traveled all of New Zealand, modeled, set up a community arts and cultural center and challenged herself as a women sheep shearer.

A passion for adventure led Mem to circumnavigate Australia as well as criss-crossing the deserts over a period of three years from 1986-89 as a four-wheel drive safari hostess.
While others took a year oversea experience, Mem headed to Asia, armed with her camera to observe the cultures and landscapes of Asia, the Mediterranean and the Far East. This culminated in bicycling through Asia, China and the Himalayas, beginning in Singapore and arriving in England 12,000 Kilometers later.
Mem then took up a lifelong ambition to travel in Africa as a safari leader and working with the indigenous tribes in animal conservation.

Over the period of seven years Mem managed her life as a rich and spectacular event while facilitating travel adventures for others. Traveling strengthened Mem’s awareness of world arts, especially in the area of human adornment and body art. Mem returned to New Zealand in 1993 and is now also a Classical Homoeopath, practicing in Balmoral, in a clinic she helped establish.

Mem’s many achievements include a Diploma in Event Management and a Certificate in Production Design Technology – special effects strand. Mem has won many awards for Body Art, including winning the Body Art section of Westfield Style Pasifika 2004 and runner up in 2005. This lead her to assisting Joanne Gair (New Zealand’s famous body artist who has painted Hollywood movie stars such as Demi Moore) with her newly released book of Body Art.

Mem is an experienced coordinator of special events and recently organized four successful body art competitions for the New Zealand Festival of BodyArt.
Her enthusiasm and passion for art and culture lends her to being a pro-active leader in this field driving her to bringing awareness, enjoyment and knowledge of Body Art to all of New Zealand. As a front person for the Festival of Body Arts 2006 we are sure she will promote body art and special effects make-up by increasing knowledge and enhancing a positive image about art and create different and creative ways of presenting art. Her unique energy and empathy for others plus a practical and sound awareness of event management issues means we have every confidence that our vision will be realized.
